Do the winter months make you feel a bit down in the dumps? Cold weather and short days can definitely have an effect on mood. And there also are an estimated half a million people nationwide who experience seasonal affective disorder during the winter months. It’s a more severe form of the winter blues that can persist for weeks at a time.
Here are some ways to help feel more upbeat during the winter months:
Soak up sunshine. Exposure to sunlight can limit symptoms, so take a seat near windows when you are indoors and get outside when the weather permits.
Get exercise. A study by Harvard University suggests walking fast for about 35 minutes a day five times a week or 60 minutes a day three times a week can help improve symptoms of mild to moderate depression.
Eat healthy. It’s important to enjoy nutritious meals. Avoid foods packed with sugar, fat and empty calories.
Schedule time for friends and fun. Research suggests taking time for activities you enjoy can make you much happier. Spend time with the people you love most and take time to relax.
